Women's safety in India remains a serious concern, and several apps address it. Most of them focus on the emergency moment itself. This article is about what happens before and after that moment — and about what Cyber Rakshak is building, and what it will not claim to do.
What Most Safety Apps Offer
These matter. They also cover only the minute in which you press the button.
What Is Usually Missing
1. Evidence That Survives
When facing harassment, online or offline, a complaint is stronger when the record was made at the time and has not been changed since: capture time, location, device details, and a record that is not easy to alter afterwards.
2. Harassment Documentation
Ongoing harassment is a pattern, and a pattern needs a timeline. A single SOS alert does not show one.
3. A Contact List That Reflects Reality
Who gets told, and when, is a decision worth making before the emergency rather than during it.
4. Discretion
For someone living with an abuser, the presence of a safety app on the phone can itself escalate danger. This is a real requirement — and it is the one claim you should test yourself, on your own handset, before trusting any app that makes it.
What Cyber Rakshak Is Building
Evidence Vault
Coming at launch: a place to file screenshots, photos and documents along with the details recorded at the time you file them. Once an item is filed it cannot be deleted. Nothing in the app can capture or file anything today — the screens are placeholders.
⚠️ No app can make evidence court-admissible. A court decides that, and the certificate the law requires has to be signed by a person who can speak to the device, not generated by software.
Incident Log
Coming at launch: grouping related items into a single incident so the timeline is visible — the pattern, not just the worst day.
SOS
Coming at launch: an alert to your trusted contacts carrying your location, opening an incident you can attach evidence to afterwards. Audio capture at the moment of the alert needs native device recording the app does not have yet; it is planned, not built.
Trusted Contacts
Coming at launch: a trusted contact is a name, a number, a relationship and one choice — alert them on SOS, or not. There are no tiers, and there is no automatic line to the police, so in immediate danger call 112, and for cyber crime 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Stealth Mode — Not Built
⚠️ Cyber Rakshak cannot disguise itself on your home screen. An earlier version of this article described a calculator disguise opened by a secret gesture; it was never implemented and should never have been published. If your safety depends on an app being invisible, verify that on the handset before you rely on it — ours or anyone's.
The Bottom Line
An SOS button is where safety software starts, not where it ends. A record that holds its shape, a timeline, and contacts who know their role matter more than the button does. The Cyber Rakshak mobile app has not been released, so none of what this article describes it doing is something you can use yet.
